Tutorial #27: Backend Dictation

Backend dictation is form of dictation where the user dictates into a recording device away from their computer and then imports that audio file into Dragon for transcription upon returning to the clinic. This is a more advanced form of dictation but is particularly helpful for large animal and mobile veterinarians.

Using Back-end Dictation in Dragon

There are two types of dictation in Dragon; front-end dictation and back-end dictation. Front-end dictation is when you dictate into your mic and you see the text appearing on your screen as you speak it, it is the most common form of dictation. Back-end dictation is when you save an audio file, and then drag-and-drop the audio file into Dragon so it can transcribe it for you. Here are is how to use back-end dictation in Dragon Veterinary:

  1. Launch Dragon Medical Practice Edition 2, if it isn't already open, by double clicking the desktop icon, clicking the icon on the taskbar if present, or by simply opening the start menu in windows and typing in "Dragon Medical Practice Edition," and then pressing enter

  2. Once Dragon opens, either select a profile to load or, if you have only one profile, wait for Dragon to load your profile

  3. Locate the audio file you want to have transcribed (either on your desktop or elsewhere on your computer)

  4. Drag the audio file up into the Dragon bar to begin the back-end transcription!
